Machine Learning Intern

May - July 2019 • Auburn, AL

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere of the workplace where I was not judged harshly for not knowing how to perform a task. At times, I was confused on how the code should be formatted to make it run properly.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more events for the research students to take part in on Auburn's campus during the summer.

Advice

I have to say that wherever you go, take in as much information as possible. Learning is a never-ending process and it doesn't hurt to gain more knowledge.

It was a great chance to be independent with my work and really lead a project.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a bit more guidance in the beginning of research. The question began very open ended.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. A lot of research is finding out what doesn’t work before finding out what does. Don’t be discouraged.

Student Worker for Human Resources

May - August 2018 • Auburn, AL

What I liked

This job was very insightful for the human resources branch of a business. I got hands-on experience with employee tax files, court orders, and insurance paperwork. This experience helped me to quickly be able to discern between different genres of paperwork based on information stated at the top of the document

What I wish was different

The only critique I have of the position is that it was a temporary position. This job was great experience for my future in business, so I wish the job would've carried on past the summer.

Advice

Push through your required hours in the beginning of the week so you can have the rest of the week to either work extra hours or take off.

Undergraduate Researcher

April 2019 • Auburn, AL

What I liked

I enjoyed the atmosphere and the culture surrounding me every day in the lab this summer. With the help of two PhD students, myself and another REU student were able to learn the skills necessary to allow us to efficiently begin working more independently. I feel that my skills for solving problems and thinking on my feet have grown immensely and I am proud to continue working the lab for my upcoming Master's of Biosystems Engineering thesis.

What I wish was different

Advice

I was quite nervous walking into the lab for the first time as I had no previous experience in this field of work. I would advise new workers to be prepared, but not to over-stress about how well they think they will do when they first begin. This is a learning process where those around you are there to help you along the way and by continuing to work hard you will continue to grow in your confidence in that field.
