MAPP Studen Nurse Intern

January - December 2019 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I loved getting the experience to feel like a more competent student nurse. I learned a lot and the nurses were so great on my floor

What I wish was different

I wish management on my floor was better. I would have considered staying if it weren't for that. But it led me to a job on another unit on the floor with amazing management so it all worked out

Advice

If you can, 100% apply. It's a little extra cash a month (~$300 after taxes for me) and it's almost guaranteed to get a job in any unit at Methodist that is hiring new grads

Research Intern

June 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I loved the community and the work I did- the department I was assigned to had incredible mentors and doctors who were all very willing to teach me and work with me to catch me up to speed and push me to learn more about the field and about research in general.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been paid; however there is a stipend scholarship you can apply for.

Advice

Come in open to learning new things and be prepared to work hard but make incredible connections along the way. In one of the best hospitals in Texas, you will be held to a very high standard of work ethic but it is 100% worth it.

Summer Intern

June - August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

This was my first research opportunity, and it was a great stepping stone for getting more involved with research at UVA.

What I wish was different

The days could be really long and boring, some days I was there from 9 am to 7 pm just charting data.

Advice

Stay in touch with your PI and postdoc because they are great resources.

Summer Translational Research Intern

June - August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I got the opportunity to get clinical shadowing experience with a world renowned neurologist and was able to work on an individual research project. To me, this was the best of both worlds.

What I wish was different

I was studying for MCAT at the same time, so the only thing I would have changed is to have moved MCAT to later so I could have spent more time researching.

Advice

This experience, and any other really, is only going to be as good as the effort you put into it. Put in the effort and really try to understand the concepts and applications of the science being taught to you and this will greatly benefit you.

Biology Research Intern

June - August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I loved the research environment and the team I worked with! I also really enjoyed not having my PI over my shoulder when I was working on the bench; it gave me a sense of independence. I also loved my research topic.

What I wish was different

The protocol for the research was sometimes monotonous. Also, towards the end of the internship, the trials failed and the data did not make any sense. Although it was frustrating, these problems are prevalent in the world of research and the experiences really prepared me for future lab work. There is nothing I would change about the internship, it was amazing.

Advice

Learn how to embrace failure (in the most positive way possible)!
