Spring 2025 Co-op - Industrial Construction

PURPOSE

This entry-level construction co-op consists of rotations in Field Engineering and/or Project Management to assist teams in the completion of designated projects while focusing on learning construction industry processes, procedures, and Crowder policies. The position objective is to educate the student in field and office construction operations and gain real-world experience. This position will report to a Project Manager and/or Site Superintendent, with indirect reporting to the VP of Operations. Upon completion of the student’s term as a Project Engineer Intern, a final evaluation will be completed by the Project Manager and other team members on the student’s performance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

·      Develop working understanding of project budgets, labor costs, invoices, contracts, and purchase orders.

·      Develop working understanding of jobsite coordination, scheduling, quality control, and safety.

·      Develop skills in reading project specifications and understanding of design & plan development, value engineering principles, and methodology of quantity takeoffs and bid packages.

·      Work productively with others in evaluating problems and solutions; and communicating with vendors, subcontractors, and field personnel.

ROTATION DUTIES

(Not in any particular order and will not necessarily complete all actions each term)

Project Engineering Team

·      Maintain project files, current drawings, and production records

·      Read and interpret plans and specifications

·      Estimate material needs for purchasing

·      Write purchase orders

·      Expedite material deliveries

·      Inventory control

·      Assist with invoice approval process

·      Learn aspects of jobsite safety

Estimating Department

·      Learn the Construction Specification Institute Master Format, divisions, and sections and how it relates to the Construction Industry

·      Learn how to read and interpret Project Specifications, contract requirements, and bid preparation

·      Learn how to read contract drawings and understand symbols and legends

·      Perform Subcontractor soliciting

·      Perform quantity takeoffs

·      Learn and utilize Bluebeam estimating software

·      Become familiar with labor costs and analyze labor for specific tasks

·      Receive and evaluate suppliers and Subcontractor’s proposals

·      Participate in bid review

·      Assist in preparation of bid package

Project Management Team

·      Assist with value engineering on the project

·      Prepare scopes of work for subcontractors

·      Understand budgets and budgeting

·      Negotiate prices and services

·      Assist with subcontract preparation

·      Assist with the management of subcontractors

·      Review and prepare submittal documents

·      Correspond and communicate with vendors, subcontractors, owners, engineers, internal office staff, and field personnel

·      Assist with analyzing, procuring, and tracking construction equipment

·      Assist with project schedule (CPM)

·      Assist field personnel with technical matters

REQUIREMENTS:  

·      In progress towards a 4-year college degree in Engineering or Construction Management

·      Ability to perform mathematical calculations and use critical thinking skills

·      Competency in, and effective use of, computer systems to perform job responsibilities

·      Ability to read and understand contracts, specifications, and engineering drawings and models

·      Ability to problem solve and communicate effectively

Willing to temporarily relocate to a job site within the Southeast US
