New Ventures Team Member Intern

In collaboration with external innovators and internal experts we find the best ideas that emerge from the latest research, create new businesses, commercialize Southern’s IP, and advance initiatives that transform industries and communities. Through Energy Impact Partners (the $3B fund of which Southern is founding partner) and our partnerships with other venture organizations such as Techstars and ENGAGE, we also invest in promising start-ups and build commercial connections between our venture portfolio and Southern’s operating businesses.

Education:

Relevant Experience:

Undergraduate study in business, finance, economics or STEM field
1 - 2 years of relevant work experience in energy industry A high-level understanding of the energy industry transition and the evolving needs of customers around sustainability and resiliency Experience supporting cross-functional teams and efforts within a large-scale, complex, and matrixed organization in a regulated industry Proven experience successfully supporting new initiatives and partnerships with other functional teams across an organization to deploy strategy Knowledge of innovation ecosystem (venture firms, accelerators, clean-tech startups, etc.) Self-starter; strong analytical, business planning, and execution skills Experience working directly with customers and partners; including structuring and negotiating relationship framework Zeal for technology innovation, business transformation and strategy development Sound judgment skills to understand priority projects and their impact to the organization’s goals Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to effectively communicate (written and orally) to build consensus around abstract and sometimes complex concepts Ability to support project owners and drive work to successful delivery to stakeholders Essential Responsibilities

Support internal team members to understand their priorities and help achieve those priorities through innovative partnerships, programs, and technologies Perform due diligence for commercialization opportunities within SC of new technologies and/or partners, including financial and feasibility evaluations Analyze external companies and assess business model viability, health, and fit within Southern Company Support business case development for potential pilots and programs Participate in cross-company working teams.
Engage with team leaders around next generation technology deployment.
Create internal and external communications (i.e., copywriting, PowerPoint graphics) Support other customer facing engagements as partnership and solution “broker.”
Monitor the evolving landscape for new energy technologies, including but not limited to electric transportation, distributed energy resources (DERs), digital technologies,  decarbonization and sustainability
