Environmental Health Specialist

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The purpose of this job is to conduct inspections to license/permit food establishments, wells, septic systems, body art facilities, child/adult care facilities, bathing beaches, campgrounds, and swimming pools to determine compliance with food code, well code, sanitary code, and other standards set by the State of Michigan. This Position is for the Land Water and Wastewater team.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs inspections, issues permits, writes reports, and enforces related codes and safety regulations for public venues.
  • Conducts plan reviews and inspects fixed facility, temporary, special transitory, and mobile food establishments to ensure compliance with applicable code standards. 
  • Enforces hygiene and safety regulations for public recreational water facilities, including pools, spas, and beaches. 
  • Samples, tests, and inspects private and public water systems; performs soil analysis and permits/inspects on-site sewage treatment systems; drafts corresponding reports and enforces corrective actions.   
  • Conducts inspections and enforces regulations for body art facilities to ensure safety, cleanliness, and bloodborne illness prevention. 
  • Performs environmental health inspections of child and adult care facilities, including food service, buildings, drinking water systems, septic systems, and outdoor recreation areas. 
  • Responds to and investigate housing complaints and other issues; condemn dwellings. 
  • Engages with community members to address environmental and health issues like trash, drug contamination, mold, and bedbug activity. 
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS  (EHS I)

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Environmental Health, or a related field.

  • 1 to 3 years of related work experience in public health inspections, public relations, and environmental services 
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EHS II)

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Environmental Health, or a related field
  • 3 to 5 years of related work experience in public health inspections, regulatory procedures, and food safety auditing 
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Registered Sanitarian
