Research Assistant

Who: We are seeking to hire an individual with a background in science/public health to serve as a Research Assistant for a CDC surveillance grant at Texas Children's Hospital (TCH). We are especially interested in candidates who are proficient in Spanish due to the large number of families that visit the hospital who only speak Spanish.

This position would be appropriate for college seniors who are planning to take a gap year before starting graduate school (e.g. medical or dental school, PA program, Master’s program, etc.). For those candidates, we would expect a commitment to work through June 1, 2025.

When: paid, part-time in spring 2024 with transition to full-time after graduation (summer 2024), variable shifts between 8 am – 11 pm, Monday through Sunday; will consider flexing hours to accommodate class schedule.

Where: Texas Children’s Hospital Main Campus

What:

  • Our team and TCH conducts surveillance for CDC to identify children who present to outpatient locations, the emergency room, or inpatient units with fever, respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms.
  • Our team reviews patient lists to identify those who are potentially eligible to participate in surveillance based on their presenting symptoms.
  • We approach the parents of the eligible children, review study procedures, and document consent for participation, if the parent agrees.
  • We administer a brief questionnaire and will either collect a stool sample (from a dirty diaper), saliva sample, and/or nasal swab, depending on the surveillance study.
  • All interested candidates should send a resume and cover letter to Teresa Lin (txlin3@texaschildrens.org) and Dr. Julie Boom (jboom@bcm.edu).
