Design Engineer I - Structural (Bridge)

Haskell’s Design & Consulting Services (DCS) Group unites architecture, engineering, and consulting professionals from across industries and geographies. While some clients are looking for turnkey design-build or engineer-procure-construct projects, the DCS Group serves clients who need specialized, fee-for-service design or consulting projects. These types of projects allow our team to form a strong rapport with client teams, marshaling them as they grow and helping them address industry and market challenges. The DCS Group serves four primary markets: Civil Infrastructure; Government, primarily the Department of Defense, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Air and Army National Guard, and the U.S. Naval Facilities Command; Industrial, focusing on food and beverage, consumer products, and utilities; and Healthcare.

In this role as a design professional, you will be responsible for the production of innovative, appropriate, cost-effective designs, drawings, and specifications in your discipline for assigned projects. You will emerge as an independent resource and begin to coordinate work with other disciplines. You will work to fulfill experience requirements for eligibility to take the professional license exam.

Job Responsibilities
  • Application of Knowledge of Structural Engineering Applications
  • Participates in project strategy meetings within discipline, develops design concepts, produces pricing and proposal presentation documents
  • Research and is responsible for discipline design compliance with proposal/client criteria
  • Design
  • Analysis
  • Performs analysis or calculations as assigned for: approach slabs, decks, concrete or steel beams, abutments, piers, foundations, bearings and joints, geometric layout, retaining walls, cost estimates, quantities and notes
  • Develop basic understanding of bridge loads and how loads transfer through the bridge to the foundations
  • Coordinates and checks work carefully to minimize all deficiencies, errors, and omissions
  • Develops ability to utilize AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and applicable State Standard Specifications and Construction Plans
  • Maintains orderly work files and prepares clear well-written memos/ correspondence. When assigned, prepares presentation materials
  • Detailing
  • Ability to read and understand design documents.
  • Construction Documents
  • Produces well-organized, finished design documents of good appearance, accuracy, clarity and correctness from layouts, sketches or written instructions. Applies discipline design and detailing fundamentals in developing designs and specifications under the supervision of and subject to final approval by the Licensed Professional
  • Assists Licensed Professional with the production/assembly/plotting of drawing packages and writing specifications
  • Assist in the development of construction plans, cost estimates, bid documents, and quantity takeoffs under the direction of a Licensed Professional
  • Subject to final approval of Licensed Professional, checks final drawings and submittal data for conformance with contract documents
  • Construction Support
  • Assist on project site visits by taking notes, photographs and sketches
  • Subject to final approval of Licensed Professional, checks shop drawings and submittal data for conformance with contract documents
  • Assist License Professional in construction observation to monitor compliance with design intent, construction drawings and observations. Prepares field reports
  • Project Management
  • Partners with technical efforts of discipline Interns, designers, technicians assigned to the project

  • Creates work plan for assigned tasks. Plan, execute, and monitor assignments, communicating status with supervisor to establish priorities
  • Meet project schedules to align with target dates for deliverables

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited university in civil/structural engineering preferred or other degree related to the civil engineering profession.
  • 0 - 2 years of experience and the ability to sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (EI) within 6 months of hire required; exam certification preferred.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, License, Certifications:
  • Limited understanding of the following structural software is desired; however, motivation to learn software upon hiring is acceptable: Microsoft Office, MathCAD, MicroStation, Enercalc, modeling software such as SAP2000 or STAAD.

Environmental Factors and/or Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, this position is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, and arm, hand and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application/form information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
