Mechanical Engineering Co-op

POSITION SCOPE: 
The Packaging Machinery Division of GPI specializes in designing automated machinery for the beverage packaging industry. We improve and adapt to consumer and environmental needs while working in teams for projects relating to customer requests. The goal of our co-op program is to develop future engineering resources for our organization while providing support to our design engineers. We structure the co-op assignments so with each work term, each co-op develops the ability to accept an increasing level of complexity and self-reliance. Although we make no guarantee of employment, it is our goal to have our Interns fully capable of stepping into a full-time engineering position within our organization by the end of the final work term. By the end of the program, the co-op will become proficient in SolidWorks, learn how to effectively communicate with engineers and customers, and learn the process of assembly, purchasing, and manufacturing of the final product. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:  
  • Design and detail parts and assemblies of automated packaging machinery using SolidWorks 3D CAD. 
  • Utilize PDM system to store machinery life cycle and generate BOMs for future use. 
  • Participate in design reviews. 
  • Assist engineers and service technicians with visits to customer facilities to evaluate equipment in the field. 
  • Analyze machine failures for root cause, then propose and implement corrective actions. 
  • Aid in creation of prototype parts using waterjet and 3D printers. 
  • Assemble automated packaging machinery. 
  • Test automated packaging machinery to insure it meets customer requirements. 
  • Visit GPI production facilities to observe other divisions of the company, such as paper mills and converting facilities. 
  • Present a summary at the end of each work semester. 

DESIRED BACKGROUND: 
  • Must be a currently enrolled student majoring in mechanical engineering and must have completed freshman year. 
  • Willing to work for three non-consecutive semesters. 
  • Previous SolidWorks experience recommended (not required). 
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, and interpersonal skills required. 
  • Strong computer skills desired, such as proficiency in Microsoft Office. 
  • Exhibit dedication and commitment to learning new skills and programs while showing initiative. 
  • Must be able to work smoothly with others and be independent with their own work.
