CDC Maternal and Child Nutrition Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available in the Nutrition Branch, Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO), within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The CDC is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: This project will provide training in the area of domestic U.S. maternal and child nutrition, with a specific focus on the importance of nutrition in the first 1,000 days (pregnancy through a child’s first two years). The research participant will collaborate with others to synthesize the science and translate it into policy and programmatic efforts designed to improve nutrition in the first 1,000 days.
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, this training opportunity includes:
- Building public health skills in research, synthesis, translation, and dissemination of evidence on social, environmental, and policy factors related to maternal and child nutrition. The majority of the research focuses on pregnancy through two years of age.
- Contributing to the development of guidance documents and written reports with an emphasis on environmental and policy strategies to help address critical factors related to a healthy pregnancy, support for breastfeeding and optimal early child nutrition in clinical settings, childcare settings, and state public health systems.
- Synthesizing information and communicating with partners and to the general public.
- Participating in interdisciplinary work groups and interacting with experts including public health nutritionists, health education specialists, evaluation specialists, maternal and pediatric health care providers, and epidemiologists.
- Conducting systematic reviews of the scientific literature on the health effects of multiple health behaviors and practices during pregnancy and the first two years of a child’s life.
- Contributing to the preparation of briefing documents on policy and program for review by public health leaders, policy makers, hospital administrators, etc.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 1, 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. There will be a 75% health insurance allowance for the participant to either obtain new or offset their direct costs for existing health insurance. There will be no relocation allowances.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
