USFS Postgraduate Science Communication Fellowship

USFS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (USFS), Pacific Northwest Research Station located in Portland, Oregon. This research opportunity will be remote, with occasional travel opportunities to the lab location in Portland, Oregon, to attend meetings and in-person mentoring.

The mission of the Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Research Station is to generate and communicate impartial knowledge to help people understand and make informed choices about natural resource management and sustainability. 

Research ProjectThe USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, based in Portland, Oregon, is offering a multimedia learning opportunity in science communication. The fellowship is within the Communications and Application group and will be supported and mentored by the Assistant Director for Communications and Applications and a strong research and communications team. This science communication fellow will be mentored in communication strategies and in the design, development, and production of multimedia science delivery products. The fellow will collaborate with scientists and communication professionals to develop products that translate and communicate science for a range of audiences using a variety mediums. Research topics are diverse and will include climate change, ecology, fire and smoke, fisheries, recreation, urban forestry, watersheds, and wildlife. 

Learning ObjectivesThis fellowship offers a unique opportunity to mentor early career scientists in science communication while building the fellow's own skills in science delivery, public relations, communications, and stakeholder engagement and outreach.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 13, 2022.  Start date is flexible and negotiable, and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for six months, but may be extended upon recommendation of USFS and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and USFS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, USFS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
