This position is in the Bureau of Environmental Health Services, in the Division of Air Quality Analysis/Analytical Laboratory. 

  • Extracts and analyzes samples for the presence of complex organic compounds in environmental air samples using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). 
  • Calculates, records, and interprets air quality analysis results while adhering to approved DHEC Standard Operating Procedures.  
  • Perform operation and maintenance of analytical instrumentation associated with sample analysis. 
  • Performs and serves as backup analyst for other methodology as assigned.
  • Prepares sample collection media and transportation supplies for shipment to field staff. 
  • Assists with other sample collection media and supplies as requested. 
  • Prepares media and reagents, and performs special analyses for emergency, special project, and source sampling.  
  • Receives and log-in samples shipped from field staff for assigned analyses. 
  • Performs quality assurance activities such as data review, peer review, data validation, and quality control tracking for analyses as assigned. 
  • Annually, reviewing and revising as necessary the laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as assigned. 
  • Completes all necessary administrative tasks (PCAS, WAS, SCEIS related functions, training, etc.) and documentation as required and requested. 
  • Performs other job duties as requested.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in chemistry and experience in a laboratory setting related to the area of employment, including experience in operating and interpreting test results from complex analytical instrumentation such as gas, ion or liquid chromatographs or atomic absorption spectrophotometers; 
  • OR a bachelor's degree in the natural sciences with academic credits in chemistry and experience in a laboratory setting related to the area of employment, including experience in operating and interpreting test results from complex analytical instrumentation such as gas, ion or liquid chromatographs or atomic absorption spectrophotometers. 
  • A doctorate in chemistry may be substituted for the required work experience.
Institutions of higher learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Experience in a laboratory setting related to the area of employment, including experience in operating, maintaining, and interpreting results from advanced analytical instrumentation such as gas or liquid chromatographs, and associated data systems.
  • Experience with general instrumentation software and Microsoft Office. 
  • Ability to perform scientific mathematical calculations, highly complex tasks, and maintain accurate records. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with peers, other scientists, and service engineers.
  • Must prioritize tasks and manage time effectively. 
  • For the safety of the employee, the safety of others and to comply with OSHA regulations, this position require the ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to include, but not limited to, boots, safety glasses, laboratory coats, and gloves.
  • This position requires the strict adherence to approved methods and standard    operating procedures for the proper collection of quality and technically defensible data. 
  • This is a laboratory position and as such involves safely working with various types of glassware, the performance of repetitive tasks, and meticulous attention to detail. 
  •  A resume should be submitted but cannot be a substitution for a complete SC State application. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • EA Preferred Qualifications:
  • A master’s degree in chemistry. 
  • OR a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and one (1) year of chemistry experience.
  • OR a bachelor’s degree in the natural or physical sciences with 16 semester hours in chemistry and two (2) years of laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of GC/MS and associated data systems used for the analysis of semivolatile organic contaminates.
  • Applicants meeting preferred qualifications will be given priority consideration over persons who do not meet preferred qualifications.
