This position is located in the Center of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Office of Dietary Supplement Programs, Division of Research and Evaluation, Safety Evaluation Branch. The Branch evaluate toxicological data, review and analyze all available information on the safety of dietary ingredients and supplements and provide advice on regulatory and public health action to promote consumer food safety.

Salary: $106,823 - $138,868 per year

Duties

  • Plans and makes recommendations on the future research needs to support hazard and risk assessments of ingredients and contaminants in food.
  • Evaluates toxicological and other data and information that pertain to the safety of ingredients.
  • Serves as a scientific reviewer and technical authority of data for evaluating toxicity data relating to the degree of hazard associated with contaminants and toxicants present or entering the food supply.
  • Collaborates with multi-disciplinary team members within FDA (Exposure assessor, Chemist, Nutritionist, and Epidemiologist) on the use of experimental findings to assess the health risks of contaminants and natural toxicants in food.
  • Provides technical support for the development of the Administrator's guidelines and enforcement programs of food safety.

Qualifications

The position of Toxicologist falls under the 0415 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-13, you must meet all requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 06/01/2022.

Basic Requirements

Degree: You must have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.

Minimum Qualifications Requirement (Specialized Experience): In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirements above, applicants must also meet the specialized experience as stated below in order to be considered.

Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.

You must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service that includes experience: reviewing and evaluating toxicological data concerning hazards associated with contaminants and related toxicants; conducting research related to hazard assessments or risk assessments.
