Director of Production & Fabrication

As Director of Production and Fabrication, you are responsible for the management of the following areas: Carpentry, Paint, Mica, Graphics, Fabric/Upholstery, Labor, Trucking, Procurement, Inventory, Client Storage, and new production departments we expect to add as Bombshell continues to grow. Your experience and skills will be employed to advance Bombshell’s missions. You are responsible for executing the client’s vision as identified in the approved Scope of Work/Packing Slip, which is often visually represented via construction drawings and conceptual renderings provided from the design team. A successful Director of Production and Fabrication works collaboratively with team members across the organization, exceeds the expectations of our clients, and strives to increase efficiencies and overall profitability.

Job Responsibilities:
Manages all aspects of the fabrication, installation, load out, and asset after-life (storage, disposal, etc.) for missions. This will be achieved with the assistance of team members working with you and/or under your direction, including any combination of the following:
  • Collaborate with the Design Team to realize the client’s vision
  • Confirm that designs offer the best construction methods, engineering, and mechanical design solutions for unique scenic elements and/or special effects
  • Collaborate with the Design Team to foster the effective flow of information and clarity of communications as it relates to completion of all construction documents
  • Review internal and external project drawing packages to ensure all specifications are accurate to meet the needs of the shop
  • Create shop drawings if/as needed
  • Design shop and warehouse workflow, including layout and equipment needs
  • Identify, specify, and procure equipment and tools to expand Bombshell’s capabilities
  • Work with shop team to move builds through the purchase, fabrication, finish, load in, installation, and load out phases of multiple missions happening concurrently
  • Oversee the specification, procurement, and implementation of all materials for builds 
  • Coordinate with outside vendors, as needed, to facilitate the production of goods that reflect Bombshell’s standards, including assembly drawings for items not produced by Bombshell
  • Oversee assembly and dry fits to validate that Bombshell quality standards are met prior to final installation or shipping
  • Determine and source equipment needs prior to installations
  • Coordinate vehicles and equipment for all uses, renting/scheduling with rental companies as needed
  • Manage onsite installation/production processes and procedures, either directly on site or through managing assigned leads
  • Implement specifications of equipment and safety protocols and verify valid and current certification of crew assigned to operate equipment
  • Work with Director of Operations on client assets stored with Bombshell for inventory review, sizes, and movement of assets
  • Schedule all production crew members for appropriate job functions in a timely fashion
  • Review weekly time sheets to maintain crew hours in accordance with approved client budgets
  • Collaborate with Director of Operations to oversee warehouses and facilities for safety protocols, required equipment, proper OSHA practices, and any PPE needed to work safely in all areas of production
  • Oversee and production inventory/par levels
  • Performs other job-related duties as needed or assigned
 
Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Production, Theatre Technology or related
  • Minimum 20 years technical production experience
  • Experience in live theatre, events, or touring
  • Strong technical skills with an understanding of commonly accepted rigging practices
  • General knowledge of A/V
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical lifts and on-site heavy equipment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to interact with clients and crew on all levels
  • Upholds and conducts business with high level of integrity
  • Has the ability to work calmly under pressure
  • Has an efficient and flexible approach to meeting deadlines
  • Complex problem-solving ability
  • Willingness to travel
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce office procedures
  • Create, read, and interpret design drawings
  • Experience with furniture build, interior design or theatrical set construction
  • Understanding of general carpentry and power tool operations
  • Excellent understanding of common building practices, construction materials, and fastening techniques
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Multi-tasking skills
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Attention to detail
  • Coordinate tasks, information, and timelines with internal and external resources
  • Skilled in the use of computers, OS-based operating environment including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to draft in Vectorworks or other CAD programs
  • Desire to update job knowledge by seeking out educational opportunities, reading professional and business publications, and maintaining personal networking
