Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Building Administrator and/or other designated administrator, the school nurse provides health services and leadership in establishing a complete and effective program of school health.

The following Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, and Key Duties and Responsibilities are given by way of example, and are not intended to be all inclusive and are not set forth in order of importance.

Qualifications:
 1.Must be a graduate of an accredited program of registered nursing and hold a current license to practice nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
 2.Must hold a valid Virginia Driver’s License.
 3.Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED required.
 4.Must have at least two years successful nursing experience. Pediatric and community health experience preferred.
 5.Computer knowledge and related skills, comparable experience is preferred.
 6.Ongoing evidence of mental and physical competence to perform assigned responsibilities may be required from a qualified physician.
7.An applicant who has had prior experience in a related position must have a performance rating acceptable to Stafford County Public Schools for such experience.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
 1.Interpret state and federal and School Board Policy and regulations regarding health requirements and immunization documentation for all new students.
 2.Establish and maintain a school health record for each student based on best practice, SCPS Health Services protocols and State Standards for Accreditation for Public Schools in Virginia.
3.Collaborate with educational staff and parents in assessing the health needs of students to prepare and implement health service care plans needed and provide chronic disease case management.
4.Maintain and adequately supervise the school health clinic.
5.Provide nursing intervention for acute illness and injury of students and staff and support student’s health needs for returning to class whenever possible and approve early dismissals, as appropriate.
6.Supervise and document medication/treatment administration in accordance with the Virginia Department of Education guidelines by a licensed health care provider and SCPS Health Services protocols.
7. Administer individual screening of vision, hearing, and scoliosis; and evaluate refer, and follow-up as required by Virginia school law and School Board regulations.
8.Make home visits in conjunction with other support staff to assist with health-related absentee problems when appropriate.
9. Protect the health of students and staff by controlling disease outbreak and spread of communicable diseases through enforcement of health practices, health department protocols and school policies.
10.Participate on School Crisis Team, 504 and Student Support Committee, as needed, in planning, prevention and implementation.
11.Complete necessary forms and procedures for Blood borne Pathogen Exposure incidents and situations related to Workers Compensation as outlined in Exposure Control Plan and School Board Policy and Regulations.
12.Implement training for staff members of workplace safety guidelines and Bloodborne Pathogens as required through OSHA and related to Workers’ Compensation. Provide first aid and referrals for staff for Workers’ Compensation claims.
13.Provide staff education and training related to medication administration, diabetes, asthma, allergy, anaphylaxis recognition and treatment, according to SCPS School Board policy and Code of Virginia.
14.Maintain a liaison with health care providers and other community agencies to support student health, wellness and independence of personal health care.
15.Provide emergency assessment, triage, and treatment as first responder for staff and students while coordinating care through EMT services and school administration.
16.Act as a resource upon request by teacher, principal, student and or parent.
17.Actively pursue professional growth activities.
18.Maintain a record of appropriate attendance and punctuality.
19.Serve as an optimal role model for students, colleagues and the general public.
20.Must work in close harmony with colleagues, supervisors, and co-workers.
21.Maintain a clean, neat appearance, appropriate to position.
22.Comply with all district and school policies and regulations.
23.Adhere to guidelines of confidentiality as outlined in federal and state laws and school board policies and procedures.
