Position Overview 
 
The Division of Developmental Disabilities is seeking to hire an independent, highly organized, and detail-oriented licensed Registered Nurse for the Shapiro Developmental Center located in Kankakee, Illinois. This position will be responsible for performing direct nursing care for people with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities. The successful candidate shall demonstrate good oral and written communication skills, be a self-starter, and be able to carry out nursing assignments under the direction of medical personnel. 
 
Job Responsibilities 

  1.  Provides professional nursing care to individuals served on an assigned shift. 
  2.  Provides work-related guidance, instructions, and explanations to lower-level nursing staff and other direct support staff in the care of individuals, injury reduction, health and safety, hygiene, treatment, procedures, and the use of equipment. 
  3.  Attends treatment team meetings to update the Interdisciplinary Team on changes in medical status, additional medical needs and completes paperwork to document medical information by policies and guidelines. 
  4.  Performs quality assurance activities including. 
  5.  Attends training to keep abreast of the latest nursing techniques and concepts. 
  6.  Serves as Center-wide medical/nursing resource on the assigned shift during the absence of other professional nursing personnel. 
  7.  Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above. 
 
Minimum Qualifications 
 
  1. Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor’s degree in nursing. 
  2. Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance) 
 
  1. One (1) year of experience interpreting and communicating in oral and written form medical and health care services rendered to patients and/or individuals, parents, guardians, and staff. 
  2. One (1) year of experience providing professional nursing care, including medication administration, based on physician orders and the specific needs of the individual. 
  3. One (1) year of experience maintaining security, cleanliness, and organization of medication cabinets/carts for the unit by standards and guidelines. 
  4. One (1) year of experience working with an Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) process with various professionals. 
  5. One (1) year of experience with set-up, application, use, and care of specialized medical equipment. 
  6. One (1) year of experience ensuring compliance with facility, department, Illinois Department of Public Health, and other State/Federal regulations in a healthcare setting. 
  7. Ability to interact with residents and co-workers in a manner that fosters respect and ongoing team building. 
  8. Requires proficiency in the use of office equipment, including personal computers. 
 
Conditions of Employment 
 
  1. Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotation basis. 
  2. Requires the ability to serve on an on-call basis. 
  3. Requires the ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted. 
  4. Requires basic computer skills. 
  5. Requires ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate. 
  6. Requires the ability to travel. 
  7. Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance. 
  8. Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check. 
  9. Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero-tolerance Drug Testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position holder is prohibited.
