Theatre Technology and Design Educator

Gann Academy seeks a skilled and experienced, part-time, technical theater professional for the 2022-2023 school year. This is a part-time, ten-month position, averaging 12 hours weekly.
The Theatre Technology and Design Educators (TTD) primary responsibility is developing and leading an extracurricular technical theatre training program aligned with Ganns two major school productions (Fall play, Winter musical). The TTD will work alongside the Theatre Director to supervise, train, and support student designers and technical crew to make sure the design and technical elements of a show are completed safely, on time, and on budget. The TTD will educate, supervise, and manage students across most areas of technical design, including sound, lighting, scenic, costumes, and properties. TTD will also coordinate and collaborate with additional professional technical staff for each production, typically including a lighting designer and set designer.

Must have strong interest and skill in collaboration with a production team, excellent pedagogical skills in experiential arts education, and proficiency in multiple areas of technical theatre. Must be interested in teaching motivated high school students who are excited to learn from a professional.Special focus will be given to audio engineering and sound design, with the TTD acting as the lead Audio Engineer on live productions and managing audio setup for school events. Audio engineer will be responsible for designing sound effects, maintaining sound equipment, configuring, set up, and break down of sound system for live musical performance including front of house and backstage sound, mics, and monitors; live mixing during performance; supervising and teaching team of student audio engineers.

This work also includes overseeing all technical aspects of the theatre while in use by the Gann community. The TTD is to ensure proper use and care of Gann Academy equipment and the facility by preparing the space for the arrival of the user, overseeing and training users in the operation of theatrical lighting and sound. The TTD will be responsible for maintaining the care and suggesting repair of facility and equipment in the space.
The TTD should be able to take after-school and Sunday hours in coordination with the Theatre Program Director and the production schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Educate, supervise, and manage students across most areas of technical design, including sound, lighting, scenic, costumes, and properties.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with additional professional technical staff for each production, typically including a lighting designer and set designer.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to plan and adapt curriculum and lessons that support student growth in the arts and interdisciplinary work
  • Collaborate with colleagues to refine and maintain the performing arts facilities, equipment, and materials
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with students, parents, and colleagues in person and via email
  • Use technology and other educational tools to support student learning
  • Attend and participate in open houses, graduation, and other special events which may take place in the evenings and/or weekends; faculty and staff are encouraged to attend student performances, art exhibitions, athletics, and other events and activities to support students and promote community engagement
  • Although not obligated, all faculty and staff are welcome and encouraged to attend, lead, participate, and/or help plan any activities as often as desired

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS
  • Technical Direction and/or Design experience in music, theater, or dance performance or years of related technical work experience in each of the fields
  • Considerable pedagogical and discipline-specific content knowledge, include knowledge of theatrical systems/equipment; lighting design, sound design and engineering, projection design, costume and properties design, as well as theater safety protocol and practices
  • Must be able to work/oversee events in the afternoons and evening, and on Saturday night/Sunday during technical rehearsals and performance weekends.
  • Strong preference will be given to qualified candidates with experience working with students or in schools, and interest in developing the infrastructure and curriculum for a new technical theatre program with an eye towards growth

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands include dexterity for office machine/supply operation including but not limited to computer, telephone, copy machine, and printers. Climbing ladders, accessing low-ceilinged spaces, handling power tools, stooping, bending, and reaching for supplies, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are also common.Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
