Associate Scientist - IVD Assay Development

Based at offices in Foster City CA, we are seeking an Associate Scientist to join the IVD Assay Development team to support the development of clinical assays based on our proprietary technologies. As a member of the IVD Assay Development team, you will contribute from product feasibility through to validation and on-market support of clinical solutions, including those in the field of Reproductive and Genetic Health. This laboratory-based role would give the successful candidate the opportunity to work with core Illumina technologies and work closely with scientists to conduct development experiments for new IVD products. As a member of this team, you will gain experience in developing new workflows using cutting-edge technologies and impact how products are used in the field for clinical applications.

Responsibilities:
  • Working closely with and reporting to senior scientists to help plan, conduct, analyze, interpret and report experiments
  • Significant hands-on work in the laboratory followed by analysis and documentation of results
  • Use of standard molecular biology techniques, e.g. PCR, qPCR and DNA quantitation
  • Operation of liquid handling robotics and NGS instruments
  • Working in Pre-PCR and Biosafety Level 2 laboratory environments
  • Performing general laboratory operational duties as required
  • Contributing to the overall success of the project; anticipating problems and working collaboratively to resolve issues
  • Meeting the requirements of IVD product development and working in a laboratory certified to ISO13485
  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to meet shared goals
  • Delivering timely results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in the Biological Sciences or similar is required and 2+ years of industry experience or advanced degree without experience.
  • Proven experience in executing laboratory protocols to a high standard
  • Understanding of scientific principles
  • Hands-on experience and good knowledge of standard molecular biology techniques, including extraction and preparation of nucleic acids for molecular assays
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills e.g. writing experimental reports, keeping accurate laboratory records and presenting results
  • Strong organization skills and the ability to work independently in the laboratory using complex workflows
  • Previous experience handling biohazardous materials including human blood products and using liquid handlers would be advantageous.
  • The ideal candidate would have an understanding of the Product Development Process and be familiar with the principles of working within a Quality Management System or regulated laboratories.

Experience/Education:
  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or related field and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
