Laboratory Certification Officer
This position is in the Bureau of Environmental Health Services, Office of Environmental Laboratory Certification.
- Responsibilities include:
- The evaluation and certification of environmental laboratories performing Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act, and Resource Conservation Recovery Act regulatory analyses under State Regulation 61-81.
- Duties include:
- Review of applications for certification for completeness.
- Review of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for compliance with EPA approved methodology.
- Review of proficiency testing (PT) results.
- Review of technical data to ensure compliance with the SOP and the EPA approved method.
- On-site laboratory evaluations are performed to evaluate the analytical techniques, instrumentation, quality control procedures and record keeping practices of laboratories reporting environmental monitoring data to the department.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- A master's degree in the natural or physical sciences, biology, chemistry, environmental health or related technical field;
- OR a bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences or related technical field and one (1) year of environmental health or related experience;
- OR an associate degree in the natural or physical sciences or related technical field and three (3) years of environmental health or related experience;
- OR high school diploma and five (5) years of environmental health or related experience.
May Require:
- Overnight travel, weekend, and after work may be required.
- The successful completion of prescribed technical coursework and passing any test relevant to the position within the probationary period or trial period.
Preferred Qualifications
- A master's or bachelor's degree in chemistry or biology with additional hours of chemistry or biology.
- Environmental laboratory experience (minimum of one year).
- Have a working knowledge of techniques in GC, GC/MS, HPLC, AA, ICP, ICP/MS, IC, and/or automated analysis procedures, "wet" chemistry and environmental microbiology.
- Technical writing experience (SOPs).
- General knowledge of Federal and State environmental regulations.
- Familiar with EPA approved methodology for these regulations.
- Successful completion of the EPA's Laboratory Certification Officer's training courses for Chemistry and Microbiology is preferred.
