Clerical - Police Services Technician

This is entry level police support services work in taking fingerprints; processing offense and accident reports; processing warrants; maintaining police data; and processing property, evidence, incoming and outgoing mail, inventory and supplies. Work requires knowledge of standard office practices and procedures, and the use of specialized skills and equipment which is learned on the job or through specialized training. Contacts require basic courtesy, tact and effectiveness in dealing with others to provide or secure information. Work is subject to established routines, standing instructions, and established procedures, but some variation in sequence of procedures is permitted based on work situations. Work is patterned involving similar situations and generally requiring only the choice of the correct procedure. Work may be performed in an office or warehouse environment and includes operation of standard office equipment such as copier, telephone, and personal computer and may include (dependent upon assignment) operation of specialized equipment such as automated record-keeping and information systems, scanning equipment, hand trucks and pallet jacks. Physical demands consist of sitting or standing at a work station for extended periods of time, using specialized equipment on an ongoing basis, and occasionally lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50lbs. Work is performed under general supervision where work assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines, and the worker is permitted to rearrange the sequence based on the work situation.

Examples of Work


Conducts name and criminal history searches through local, state, and national crime information systems. Takes fingerprints. Accurately verifies all property/evidence received is correctly packaged, properly stored and documented in a database system. Ensures property/evidence is properly released, donated, purged or retained. Monitors and maintains adequate levels of supplies and uniforms for distribution to staff. Provides information to law enforcement agencies and others. Files and retrieves various types of documents. Enters information into manual and automated record keeping systems. Codes and prepares various documents, reports, and materials for data input and document imaging. Codes, inputs, updates and edits offense and accident reports. Verify information and assemble appropriate records for hearings, serving of warrants, and other required actions. Receives, verifies and stores incoming shipments of inventory for tracking and disbursement. Inspects, scans and receives packages and freight. Sorts and delivers mail to multiple locations. Verifies purchase orders/correct shipments. Operates a vehicle to transport materials and supplies. Loads and unloads materials and supplies. Operates radio, teletype, typewriter, personal computer, and computer assisted information processing systems, scanning equipment, hand trucks and pallet jacks. Maintains confidentiality of records and other sensitive information. Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies. Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


Knowledge of alpha and numeric filing procedures. Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures. Knowledge of Sheriff's Office procedures and policies as relates to fingerprints, accident and offense reports, warrants and capiases, and property and evidence procedures and mail or freight processing. Knowledge of inventory control systems. Skill in performing basic arithmetical computations. Ability to count money. Ability to keep records. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to radio, teletype, typewriter, and other office equipment. Ability to operate a personal computer using email, word processing and database applications. Ability to lift moderate to heavy items if assigned to certain positions. Ability to analyze and comprehend written material.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information


Ability to read and write English. Must have at least two years of education and/or experience in clerical work. Dependent upon assignment must be able to type 30 words per minute. Must be able to pass the same background screening and polygraph testing as the sworn officers.
 
Other Requirements
 
The probationary period for this class is twelve (12) months. Depending on assignment, this classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville's Drug Free Workplace Policy (0401). LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: If assigned to the Property and Evidence Section, a valid FLA Class E Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class. Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver
