Marine Diesel Mechanic

SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs skilled preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, primary and secondary repair, and modifications to mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic components of vessel systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Travels to the marina or dock where the vessel is located.
  • Assists in the development and training of employees engaged in marine equipment maintenance and repair. Assists in identifying and recommending measures to improve and maximize production methods, quality, equipment performance and utilization, and working conditions.
  • Performs acceptance testing and pre-service inspections of new equipment. Perform all levels of preventative maintenance and repairs to vessel and marine equipment.
  • Must be able to diagnose, repair and/or replace any subsystem including but not limited to: hydraulic, steering systems and associated gears, charging and other electrical equipment, inboard engines, air conditioning, plumbing and intake
  • Inspects parts to detect imperfections and or changes in dimensional requirements. Lubricates and cleans functional parts; repairs or replaces defective parts. Adjusts functional parts of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Performs water testing of vessels to troubleshoot systems or determine the performance of corrective actions. Prepares work orders to document repair procedures and time. Be able to work in a time stamped environment.
  • Safely operates shop equipment such as fork lifts, floor scrubbers, lathes, and drill presses, grinders, welding machines and other tools within close tolerances by following verbal and written instructions, understanding blueprints, drawings and specifications.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must satisfactorily complete a DOT physical examination, drug screen and background check.
  • Knowledge of marine engine and electrical auxiliary systems.
  • High level welding skills.
  • Knowledge of marine hydraulic systems and related parts.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in confined spaces.
  • Knowledge of boat steering systems.
  • Proven work experience as a marine mechanic.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED required; equivalent to graduation from high school or vocational school.
  • Degree in mechanical engineering preferable. Experience equivalent to completion of an apprenticeship program in a mechanical trade or five year’s work experience as a marine mechanic; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare work orders and other written correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, area, circumference and volume.

REASONING ABILITY
  • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
