JOB SUMMARY

The Mechanical Engineer researches and designs components and mechanical systems for packaging electronic product assemblies used in harsh environments. Applications require knowledge of plastics, injection molding, surface design, displays, user interface, sealing techniques, IP ratings, thermal management, and structural module design.

The employee will create 3D model files of mechanical housings, components, tooling, and fixtures; create 2D manufacturing drawings; work closely with various component suppliers; and perform other duties as assigned.

A hands-on approach and basic fabrication skills are critical to success in this role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyze product specifications and performance requirements to determine designs that provide a good balance of performance, functionality, cost, and ease of manufacture.
  • Direct and physically participate, when needed, in the construction and testing of prototypes to evaluate the design and functionality of the product.
  • Solicit and evaluate input from various sources regarding product design and functionality to meet project, customer, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Review product designs for compliance with standard engineering practices, company and industry standards, customer requirements, and related specifications.
  • Create, maintain, and/or direct the creation of essential design information and documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Evaluate the feasibility and applicability of newer technologies and methods to products and designs.
  • Meet or exceed typical expectations for creativity, productivity, quality, and safety.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Industry design experience packaging electronic modules and controlling design data with 3D CAD software. SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, industrial design, and problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes such as injection molding and machining.
  • Experience with 3D printing, machining tools, mills, and drill presses.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and tolerance stack analysis.
  • Knowledge in the selection and use of materials, including plastics, steel, and aluminum.
  • Knowledge of standard drafting practices and the application of the ASME Y14.5M Dimensioning and Tolerance standard or similar.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of design experience.

  • Ability to locate, select, and communicate with vendors.
